Mondaino’s Palio del Daino: A Renaissance Revival in the Heart of Romagna

Nestled atop a hill on the border between Rimini province and the Marche region, Mondaino—once lauded by Federico da Montefeltro as an unconquerable stronghold—hosts the Palio del Daino, a highly acclaimed Renaissance reenactment. This spectacular event commemorates the 1459 truce between Sigismondo Malatesta and Federico da Montefeltro, offering a captivating journey through the glorious past of the Italian Renaissance. From August 15th to 18th, 2024, the town’s districts will engage in spirited competitions, filling the streets with a vibrant medieval atmosphere. Stalls, artisan workshops, street performers, and captivating spectacles will transport visitors back in time. Savour the local delicacies and wines, a true celebration of “wholesome nourishment for body and soul,” as the old adage goes.

Prepare to be enthralled by a rich tapestry of medieval entertainment: dancers, jugglers, jesters, musicians, falconers, fire-eaters, puppeteers, circus artists, medieval soldiers, magicians, parades, flag-throwers, jousting tournaments, and even inquisitors staging mock witch burnings. The climax of the Palio will unfold in Piazza Maggiore, a stunning semicircular square graced by a Neoclassical portico—one of Romagna’s most picturesque settings.

The 2024 festivities will once again feature the awe-inspiring Carmina Burana. On August 18th, at 10:45 PM, preceding the midnight fireworks display, experience the grandeur of this medieval poetic masterpiece, set to music by Carl Orff in 1937. The performance will be enhanced by the elegant dances of the Dulces Damae, the captivating presence of Madonna Lucrezia, and the fiery spectacle of the White Dragon. Maestro Marcello Mancini will lead the orchestra, accompanied by the Galli choir from Rimini and the Allegre Note choir from Arzune. A comprehensive brochure detailing the diverse activities and performances of this 34th edition is available. Embark on a captivating journey through time, exploring the enchanting medieval world of Montefeltro—through your senses, your memory, and your palate. Stay updated on events and festivals!
